If
you have ever been lying in bed during the night and was rudely awakened
by a police or fire siren driving by, I hope this will bring an understanding
to why the siren was on. I have heard the question from communities of why do the police, ambulance, and fire departments use their sirens during the night when there is no traffic on the roads. This is especially the case for rural areas where the community might be awaken by passing sirens through the night. The answer is debated often in news groups and publications. However, there is one very simple and prudent answer. The law states that the siren and lights must be functioning during an emergency response. Therefore, if there is an accident and the emergency unit was only using its lights, the emergency unit could be liable. Many departments during the night will run their sirens at approaching intersections and blind spots. However the accident you have with the car you did not see so your siren was not on is a dangerous predicament. Therefore, the siren that awakes you is on for the safety of both the public and emergency services. |
