An often asked question is, why there was so much damage when the fire seemed to be small or not in the immediate area of damaged property. These damages often are the result of heat and smoke. Heat in a structure is extremely layered and often referred to as the thermal balance. Heat at the ceiling can be in excess of 1200 degrees Fahrenheit while at the same time, the floor temperature may be less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Often three foot above the floor, temperatures may only be from 300 to 600 degrees.

Take a look at the following pictures. Both of these pictures were taken in the same structure.

These pictures show a real defining line of heat and smoke. The actual fire was about 30 feet away.

Fire Damage

This picture of the fake plant again shows how heat builds up closer to the ceiling. Notice how the top part of the plant is melted and the bottom portions seem untouched. This plant was actually located on the second floor about 90 feet away from the fire area.
